Lords of the Manor
The de la Warres were distinguished soldiers who came to England with the Plantagenets in the twelfth century. This may be the reason why John, Earl of Gloucestershire and brother to King Richard the Lionheart, gave the manor of “Wichen” 
to Sir John de la Warre in 1185.
In 1602 James I appointed Thomas de la Warre captain-general of the new English colonies in Virginia. Thomas was the last de la Warre of the manor of Wickwar.

Sir Robert Ducie, Lord Mayor of London and banker to Charles I purchased Tortworth Manor, including the Manor of Wickwar in 1638.
